Dog has displaced hip after hit by car. What are options?
Well, The sling came off today and the joint has slipped out of place again.
The vet can try to pin it (Reasonable,$300) but is trying to sell a femoral head replacement.
What are the options. The dog doesn't seem to be in any pain, except it has lost the use of the leg, obviously. Is this an option also? I only ask because I did have a pointer shatter a leg before and he was OK , even though the bones did not heal right.
The Dog is a seven year old shepherd mix.
Has your vet suggested a femoral head- ostomy (FHO)? I don't know if it's done much anymore because they are perfecting the replacement surgery.
I think that the FHO can be more successful than trying to pin the hip. And the surgical cost is about the same. And probably an amputation would be around $300.
I had a dog who had this surgery on both hips (though 11 years apart) and did fine. But ask your vet about his experience with it cause what was standard 15 years ago could be looked upon as archaic now.
Dogs are good at hiding pain, and I think NOT treating it would be a bad idea.
