Frequently Asked Questions:

toddler with a red spotty rash......?
Okay so my daughter woke up with a rash, red spots that go from her neck to the side of her chest all the way wrapping around her back. Some are the size of an eraser of a pencil, while others are bigger. Some of them are raised with a light pink ring around them that equals to a quarter size. I already called the doctor and they basically said to watch it, if it's still there in a week call back, and that they don't want to see her. I just want to know if anyone had the same thing happen with their kids, if so what was it? Also, I'm 27 weeks pregnant with my second child, so I'm tempted to call a different hospital or clinic to have her seen, but wanted to see if anybody knew anything.
Honestly? Based on your description, it sounds like chicken pox. Most pediatricians WILL NOT see a suspected case of chicken pox due to the risk of infection of other patients. Normally they will diagnose over the phone.
If the red bumps become blistered by the end of the day and tomorrow they look yellowish and begin to get crusty, then that is likely what she has.
You don't say how old she is. In the US, most babies are vaccinated against chicken pox at 12 months old, but they can still get a mild case. If you notice a change in the rash like I described, call you pediatrician back and let them know. If they do think it is chicken pox, they will not see your daughter as there is nothing you can do for it except let it run its course. If they say chicken pox, be sure to call you OB and let him/her know.
Don't panic though, it could just be an allergic reaction to something, so if they don't blister or crust, then just keep her comfortable and moisturized until it passes.
