Native American Medicine Pouches?
Advise needed.
I am white, but learning the Lakota ways. A friend gave Me a medicine pouch, but it is far to large and bulky to wear about My neck. I would feel more at ease tying it off at My side to My belt. Is this acceptable??

In my opinion and experience, I hardly ever see medicine pouches outside of, well, ceremonies. If a person has a small medicine pouch it is worn around the neck and under the shirt. You don't see it unless the shirt comes off...typically at a ceremony. (BTW: for all the jack@sses who think women take their shirts off at ceremonies, no, it's just men who might do that.) Any pouch bigger than say a half dollar (which is still pretty big) is kept with a person's other sacred items and only comes out in preparation for a ceremony or at a ceremony and not worn on the body.
The only people I ever see wearing leather pouches as you describe wanting to wear yours (whether they're medicine pouches or not, I don't know) are white people or people who believe they have a Native ancestor and who want to get in touch with "the ways." LOL. Typically I see these people (white and "descendants") sporting their bags at pow-wows and other Native events. What's funny is that Native people don't wear these types of things (leather bags - medicine or not, but especially medicine) when out and about so the bag wearers really stand out and not in a good way but more of a 'there's another one of those type of people' way, complete with an eyeroll.
ETA: I agree with Mr. Two Crows -- It's likely a tobacco pouch. Tobacco pouches are not generally worn on the body either but are kept with a person's other sacred items.
