I personally liked "Uncle Tom's Cabin". Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote this around the Civil War and it had a major effect on what happened during that time. It is about slavery and again was a controversial piece of literature at the time.
The Grapes of Wrath is about the Dust Bowl. It is also a great book by a wonderful author. I enjoyed it but I don't know if everyone would.
All of the books on your list are good. Don't read them just so you can get through them quick. Digest whichever one of these you decide upon. If you do it for yourself and not just as an assignment you cannot help but learn and at the same time do right by your teacher.
