a few questions for baby-wearing parents?

I'm looking into purchasing a sling for my second baby (due in April). I attempted babywearing with my son, but he didn't want anything to do with it (perhaps I started too late).

I'm leaning towards a ring sling.
What material is best? I've see everything from simple cotton to elegant silk.
Does the size of the ring make a difference? Is bigger or smaller better?
Do you prefer a sling with a longer tail? or does it just get in the way
Which is better padded, unpadded, or lightly padded?

Thanks

I used an unpadded ring sling and loved it. Mine was a maya wrap (www.mayawrap.com, now they are calling the style I used the "mamababy sling" and it is about $50). That was the best that was available when my kids were young, but there are many brands and styles to choose from now. I had once tried a padded sling I bought in a store, but I am small and I found it bulky. The padding also made it hot and difficult to adjust.

Even without padding, you should be able to "fan" the material out over your shoulder to balance the weight more evenly. I often used the "tail" for covering up while breastfeeding. You should be able to order a sling in whatever size you need. If you are tall, you need more material. If you are short, the "extra" material becomes a tail that is too long and gets in the way.

I particularly liked the versatility of that kind of sling. I used it from newborn to over a year old with my son. It is adaptable because you learn to adjust it for positioning the baby at different stages. Newborns tend to like the cradle hold, but as they get older you can position them to face forward, toward you, or on your hip.
