Hiking and camping recommendations (good for kids) in Southern California?

We live in the Bay Area (with kids who are 7, 5, and 3) and are planning to take a week long trip (over the last week of October) down to San Diego to visit Legoland, the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, and SeaWorld.

But along the way (or once we arrive), we'd also like to spend a couple of days hiking and perhaps a night camping. Any suggestions of places that would be good given the ages of our kids. I should add that my wife is not really a camper, so the roughing it would definitely have to be light.

1) Big Bear Lake has some great camping and hiking adventures. You can stop by the Discovery Center on the north side of the lake...they can give you all sorts of great information!!

2) San Gabriel Canyon-Take the 210 east to Azusa Ave and go north up into the canyons. Go to the East Fork Campground where the kids can play in the water, the camping is great and hiking trails are great!!
