HELP! Dog stuck.....?
I have a seven month old pug/chihuahua mix. She just got spayed today and when we brought her home, she ran under the bed. This really wouldn't be a problem, but she keeps licking the wound. Obviously, I can't pull her out or anything like that because it will hurt her. I've tried talking her out of the bed, being stern, luring with treats, etc. She isn't interested. If/when I get her out, I am going to put her in her carrier and buy her a cone so she can't lick/chew the incision, but how do I get her out of there. Also, she is just out of reach. I got a broom and tried to gently prod her out, but she didn't budge.
Are you alone or are there other people in the house? This would be easier with two people she knows.
Get a leash and bring the crate somewhere nearby.
Close the bedroom door.
You are going to have to move the bed. She'll get out of the way. If you have two people, one can speak to her in reassuring and calm tones while the other moves the bed.
Get a leash on her and put her in the crate.
And for anyone else, this is one of the million reasons to have a crate and to have the dog trained to like it BEFORE you actually need it!
ETA: Be prepared to deal with a dog in pain. If she is in pain, even if you have not ever seen an aggressive action from her previously, she might be sensitive to being handled right now. Which means she may nip you.
You have to move calmly and swiftly. If you act like the world is ending and that you are scared, you will only make her more upset. Calm and steady is the way to go here.
