what are the benefits of carrying your baby in a sling?

I bought a really good sling and I can hold my baby tummy to tummy rather than him being all bunched up in a pouch-like sling.

What have you found to be of benefit when carrying your baby around? I've heard babies who are carried a lot in an upright position suffer less gas and tummy pain - is that right?

I never thought I would get a sling. But when I bought a HotSling, it was soooo fabulous and wonderful.

I could go shopping and just push my cart without having to worry about carrying the baby car seat. I could just go anywhere with the sling, even walk around the zoo for hours. I could feed her in there. It was pure freedom! I always saw moms lugging around a carseat, and the baby's head would jar to and fro as the parents would hit the carseat on their legs while walking. It seemed so uncomfortable. My baby in the sling was so purely comfortable. The sling with the baby felt like it was just part of my body. And the baby loves it too, it's a good transition from the womb to the outside world because the baby gets that 'womb' feeling of being secure and tucked in.
I don't know about the less pain and gas thing, but my daughter never really had that kind of problem...
I am so ready to have this next baby in November..I will be HotSlinging him as soon as I can, I'm not going to wait like I did last time! My daughter grew out of her sling at around 7 months. She got too wiggly and active to be bothered staying in the sling. It was a sad day when I had to retire the sling! *sniff
