At how many pounds is a baby considered big?

39 weeks pregnant and due in about a week.had a last sonogram today to check baby's weight.he currently weighs approximately 8 pounds 6 ounces.i was wondering if this is considered big because i'm scared about an episiotomy.how many mothers out there had above 8 pound babies and how did delivery go?
answers appreciated.

My son was 8 lbs 13 oz at birth. He was born at 39.5 weeks and was estimated to weigh 8 lbs 4 oz at my 38 week sonogram. The estimates they give you from the sonogram aren't very accurate (+ or - 10%).

My labor and delivery went well, though I did have an episiotomy. My labor was augmented with pitocin because my water broke but I wasn't having productive contractions. The result was a pretty fast labor, with my son being born within eight hours of labor starting. I pushed for 35 minutes and he was born. I think my doctor was quite aggressive about getting him out because my son's heart rate was irregular at times. So, the speed of delivery probably contributed to my needing an episiotomy.

I spoke to my doctor before labor and told him I really didn't want an episiotomy. He told me he would avoid one if be could, but that a controlled cut was better than an uncontrolled tear. I know the current research today disagrees with that. And for what it's worth, I still have some uncomfortableness during sex and it's almost one year later. So I'd try to avoid one if I have another child. Massage of the perenium is supposed to eliminate the need for episiotomies, right?

To assuage your fears a bit -- I had four friends who gave birth around the time I did, all with babies bigger than 8 lbs. I was the only one with an episiotomy.
