What do I need to know about kittens?

I'm getting a baby kitten (ready to go in about a week) and I need advice. I unfortunately can't get another kitten as my landlord won't allow it (I'm moving into elderly/disabled housing and it's part of the terms of agreement to have one pet per household max). On the bright side, I have tons of time and love to give it. Please let me know what to expect from a young kitten!

I have:

A scratching post
Ceramic food and water dishes
Cat bed
Cat carrier
1 toy
Litter box scoop

That's what I have so far. I know I need a litter box and litter, as well as more toys. What else should I buy before welcoming this adorable baby into my home?
Also it will be kept indoors and not declawed. Thanks!
He will also be 8 weeks in less than a week... thanks again :)

You stated in about a week. So I hope that means the kitten will be at least 8-10 weeks old.

You are in for quite a ride, as kittens come turbocharged, and they get into and onto everything, so have your place child proofed. In other words, anything you would not want a human baby getting into applies for the kitten.

I would also get an inexpensive cardboard scratcher, as not all kittens will use a vertical scratching surface, at least not at first. Your kitten may not use the bed, since it will select a place it likes.

Toys can be as simple as a wad of paper. Kittens like to chase and swat things. Even a cardboard box or paper sack (handles cut off) will provide hours of play.

It is best if you can continue with the food the kitten is eating when you adopt it. Any changes need to be done gradually, if you wish to make a change. And your kitten is the decider, so if it doesn't agree with the change, it won't eat.

I am providing a link to an article on introducing a kitten into your home. There is also a suggestion of things to get, but Feliway is rarely needed.

Taking your kitten to your vet right away is really a good idea, since it gets a health assessment, gets set up for vaccinations and then spay or neuter, and there are no surprises.
